Hey, so I’ve noticed a lot of weird misinformation about Gus Walz. He has the same diagnosis as me—nonverbal learning disability. We struggle with processing and expressing nonverbal information; take things literally and have difficulty with nuance, other things. Not nonverbal.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but writing is a lifetime, not one book, or essay, or review. It's almost a relief: you will always have it, even if you think you don't. It'll be there. You can fold it up in your pocket and take it with you, forever, I swear

So I’ve been making cups to match the books I really loved last year. It’s taking me a long time because of course I have to keep color matching and that’s a huge challenge. But I wanted to share a few.

I’m really sad. I thought I would be angrier. But I’m really sad.

Last night, someone asked everyone who they “wanted to get to know better in 2023.” My husband and I instantly responded, “Nobody.” I am with the right person.

My latest attempt (that I may throw back into the kiln for one last firing) is an English grolleg porcelain cup made to match THE WOMEN COULD FLY by @megiddings. This book also kept me up at night and I carved little bits into the bottom to match the texture on the cover.
Book The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings and the cup to match the cover in purple, red, blue, and orange.

Today is my “second birthday,” the anniversary of my suicide attempt at age 19. I typically make cake to celebrate living. I never imagined writing a book about my attempt or medical debt or that COST OF LIVING would be out in the world now. 🥰 I’m really happy to be here.

The original thing was my book cup. I sent these to @HenryHolt folks and also blurbers and friends and so on. This process drove me crazy because I couldn’t get the color right. And I ended up switching clay bodies to get things right. I still need to mail the last few.
Cost of Living the book next to a cup that resembles it.
Orange cup with white “bandages” on it held to the light. There are exterior deck stairs behind.

A year ago, I thought we’d have a kid. Now, we’re not. Mostly I’m okay with this. But sometimes it’s complicated. 🧵
