Been keeping this under wraps for months and it almost doesn't feel real, but it is: I'm writing the definitive book on shoegaze. It'll be out 2026 via @StMartinsPress.
The stark contrast between UCLA โ where cops let psychotic fascists assault defenseless kids โ and Columbia โ where cops themselves assaulted defenseless kids โ on opposite sides of the country, on the same night, while the mainstream media spins it, is legitimately maddening.
What in the FUCK is going on with this Spotify desktop update??? Genuinely โ *genuinely* โ the most confounding, clunky, basically unusable UI update I've ever seen? I'm fuming lmao
I have unwavering faith that a worker-owned music publication that publishes fearless criticism, savvy reporting, and smart features people actually want to read could be made sustainable. I really do. I hope some of the greatest minds in our field make a go of it.
Can anyone help me identify the Girls episode where Ray is lying on his couch peacefully reading and listening to records. Middle of the series I think. Need to screenshot this scene for #relatable purposes and I literally can't find it online no matter what keywords I search ๐
Framing herself as a victimized underdog, despite materially being the biggest artist in the history of music, is fundamental to her brand. Her fans can't just love her, ther adoration must be couched in *righteousness*. It's been a profitable approach for her.
Emmure frontman Frankie Palmeri went mask-off Nazi last week. I wrote about his demented worldview, the ideological void of deathcore, and why Emmure are the 21st century's most prescient band. Nihilistic, violent, extreme.
This is James Castle. They sound like if the Cloud Nothings drummer played on the first two Dinosaur Jr. albums. I don't think they know it yet, but they're the best new band in Pittsburgh.
In 2023, shoegaze is bigger than ever. Major label signees, unprecedented Billboard charts, record streaming figures, and mainstream visibility. The sound, look, and reach of the genre are changing. And TikTok is the engine.
My analysis for @stereogum.
At the Panchiko show. Absolutely staggering how popular this band is. Longest merch line I've seen in ages. Every kid here is dressed like they have a strong opinion on Wisp. A genuine cultural phenomenon in a way that I have not witnessed for an indie band in a long time.
