Time to reveal my wooden Game Boy, which I CNCed out of walnut wood. How do you like it? 1/2 #cnc #gameboy #retrogaming
Photo of the dark brown wooden Game Boy with white buttons and white screen bezel ist standing on a white surface with a dark blurred backdrop. It shows the title screen of Tetris. To the left and right are wooden Game Boy cartridges. The left one has the same color as the Game Boy and has a carved label reading "Pokemon Walnut version". The other one is made of brighter wood and reads "Pokemon Oak version".
Detail shot of the power switch at the top of the wooden Game Boy. The shot also shows the white screen bezel and the detailed decorative lines that are part of the recognizable design of the original Game Boy.
Photo of the dark brown wooden Game Boy with white buttons and white screen bezel standing next to an original Game Boy with a light gray injection mold case, a gray screen bezel, black D-pad and red A and B buttons.
Photo of the CNC machining process. A block of wood on the wooden bed of a CNC router is already showing the recognizable design of the backside of a Game Boy. A spinning fine end mill is drilling into a part of the battery compartment. The wood is noticably brighter than the finished Game Boy as it has not yet been oiled.

Oiled and equipped with a main board from an original Game Boy. It fits almost perfectly along with the (non-original) power switch and battery contacts. Now I need some spare time for the top half. 1/2
Back-side of a Game Boy case made from walnut wood. It is just the case on a white background with an open battery cover. Even the battery contacts are still missing.
Inner side of the back half of a Game Boy case made from walnut wood. Many cutouts, bumps, drill holes and other structures are visible which serve to hold circuit boards, screws or controls. At this point it is only the wood piece without any electronics.
Inner side of the back half of a Game Boy case made from walnut wood with the main board of an original Game Boy placed into the structures of the case. In particular one can see how the main board fits with controls sticking out of the cutouts on the side, battery contacts going through gaps towards the battery compartment on the back and a breakout board for the headphone jack screwed into the bottom end.

Why have I never used heat-set inserts before?

Some have suggested to add a finish to the wood Game Boy cartridge. So, here is how it looks after applying linseed oil.
A photo of the backside of an original Game Boy with a cartridge made out of walnut wood inserted.
Empty halves of the wooden Game Boy cartridge on a table. The top is seen from the top (with a label "there.oughta.be") and the bottom half is placed such that its inside is seen.
Two halves of the wooden Game Boy cartridge on a table. A PCB has been placed into the bottom half and the top half is placed upside down such that its inside is seen.
Assembled wood cartridge seen from above. The label on the grip area reads "there.oughta.be" which is the URL of my blog.

I bought the filthiest GBA I could find on eBay to verify that the GB Interceptor also works with the Game Boy Advance. (Only original GB games, of course.) Waiting to receive the revised version. If it works, it's almost finished.

Some new features for the GB Interceptor: Frame blending, DMG green mode, status screens, games relying on LY instead of vsync interrupt supported and many more games tested. ...and the Game Boy Camera is working!
