    UU Belfast has no authority to change the name of a university college in the North West, which is held in trust by the people of Derry and which precedes UU's chequered existence by 100 years. We need a new cross-border commission to run Magee as an autonomous university - NOW!

    Derry fought tooth in nail for 20-plus years to get 70 medical students - for which we will pay £45m out of City Deal resources. Belfast has just given itself 80 new medical students at the stroke of a pen. Can you imagine it had been the other way about?

    Council will tomorrow debate a proposal to stop City Deal funding being given to UU. This £85m, coupled with the return of Magee and its running budgets to the city-region, can best be used to allow us develop our own great, independent university. We need to invest in ourselves.
