When Tobi Amusan wins a medal later today in the women’s 100mH, it won’t have been because of anything Nigeria did. Going to school in UTEP, access to world class training facilities, competing regularly, big sponsors are the main reasons. Yet, Nigeria will claim the glory.

To have a realistic chance at the Olympic gold or a world championships medal, an athlete absolutely needs genetic talent and right youth training regimen. Tobi Amusan has the former. However, it costs between 100k and 200k dollars to train this athlete for a 2/4 year cycle.

Nigeria and many other African countries just cannot afford that. And if they do, it will be only a handful of athletes that will benefit. Still, the structures are lacking to ensure we get these athletes to that level.

At the African Championships in Mauritius in June, I asked Tobi Amusan which she would pick. Breaking the world record or wining a Gold in the women's 100mH in Eugene? She has taken both of them at the #WorldAthleticsChamps
