People who hoard knowledge feel like they’re powerful but really they’re just sad and pathetic. Don’t be them. Share resources. Collaborate. Keep people in the loop. Give credit where it’s due. Life will be better. You’ll be happier. And you’ll get further.

We white South Africans need to confront the fact that apartheid was a crime against humanity. And this flag a symbol thereof. Burn it.

I was a Deputy Dean for Research when Prof Phakeng was DVC for Research so I had a direct line to her for 3yrs. She came up thru the ranks, really knows her stuff ~ and expects that you know yours & are as well prepared as she is. Never anything but civil, considered, measured.

In 2015 I wrote a book about why so few rape cases in South Africa lead to prosecution & conviction, based on police dockets, data from @RapeCrisis & interviews with police, prosecutors & magistrates. It's available for free download at researchgate.net/publication/33… @Jen_Thorpe

10 yrs ago Callixte Kavuro was an asylum seeker, working as a guard nights while doing an LLB in the day. He lost everything again in the 2008 xenophobic violence. 10 yrs later he has an LLB from @UWCLawFaculty, LLM from @UctLaw and TODAY a PhD from @Matieslaw. Respect. @CKavuro

I warn my students all the time that the longer you delay writing that piece the more pressure you’ll feel to get it perfect. To the point that you just about can’t write. I speak from experience. Bitter experience. And yet here I sit.

In Durban with my 11 yr old, who is into street names. Today we talked about Ruth First, Solomon Mahlangu, Charlotte Maxeke, Sandile Thusi, Samora Machel & David Webster. In Cape Town it is possible to move thru parts of the city in complete ignorance that apartheid ever ended.

When did it become a thing to put all the degrees you dropped out of in your bio? If this is how we’re doing things, then from now on I’m claiming my BA (incomplete) from Wits, thank you very much. #witsieforlife 🥳

ALL Nigerian scholars were denied visas for this year’s Law & Society conference in Washington DC. I no longer know what to say. So many obstacles for African scholarship. @AmbreenaManji @CAAS_ACEA @law_soc

Strikes me that I’ve never seen a professor described as ‘one of the world’s leading experts on North America and the Global North’. Wonder why 🤔?

Driving to soccer at Camps Bay my 11yr old asks who Victoria Road was named for. I tell him about the 3 Victoria’s who come to mind: Beckham, Mxenge & Queen V. Must be Mxenge he says, ‘cos what did the other two ever do to deserve it. I agree. Victoria Rd reclaimed.

Here’s the thing - this is not about 4 bad apples. It is about conduct that is enabled, validated & legitimated by the @CityofCT every day. It’s like a vat of vinegar - everything you toss in will turn into a pickle. Investigate that.
The City is in the process of suspending staff members pending further investigation and disciplinary procedures related to an incident today in Khayelitsha. We are saddened by the conduct depicted on the video footage and we do not condone any forceful and dehumanising conduct.

My parents passing has brought home how different children in the same household living with the same two adults can have totally different experiences, memories & even mythologies of their parents. Also how little sons understand about their mothers as women.
