Enjoying the fruits of my labor now that I finished my 12-legged 'Carpentopod' table project. See
decarpentier.nl/carpentopod for project info, or see it live at @EHVMMF this 13 & 14 Sept.
Finished designing, building and assembling most components: Turns out my table can actually WALK as well as I hoped it would! Next steps: Implement remote control, connect a battery, and open up the throttle...
By popular request, I've now open sourced the exact dimensions of the evolved Carpentopod's linkage system. So feel free to use it for your own projects! decarpentier.nl/carpentopod
Like Theo Jansen, I found my leg mechanism using a custom evolutionary optimization algorithm, simulating millions of options to find an optimum. So it's similar in spirit, indeed. But mine has an extra joint position and exact toe radius, and all other ratios are different too.
To keep my sanity at home, I'm designing & building contraptions for fun, like this WIP
bamboo 'table' that will be free to roam the indoors once finished, and bring me my coffee.
(Not sure it helps with my sanity, but it sure is more fun.)

Clarification: The Carpentopod linkage is public domain, but the table's design is not. Hence, I see growing/running any kind of business based on the table's design without consent as IP infringement. However, personal/educational builds are fine! PLEASE RESPECT THIS AND MY WORK
I'm hearing the new performance update for Horizon Forbidden West is next level. People are reporting that performance mode on PS5 now looks nearly as good as fidelity mode and is a major improvement in every way. Guerrilla must've been working really hard on this.
This shows the the walking table's leg mechanism in more detail. So 6 legs, 1 crank and 1 motor for each end of the table, and then drive it like a tank.
The linked blog post actually contains a nice visual comparison between the two different linkages. But yes, Theo Jansen's work most definitely also inspired me to look into this in the first place.
Cheers! All leg pieces consist of multiple 3/4" sheets of bamboo CNC-ed and glued together to make it really solid. There are 100+ ball bearings in there, so the creaking should be fixable once i figure out what's slightly off atm. Though I kinda like it :). Top's indeed temp.
