Pre-2010, 50g of crack-cocaine got you a mandatory minimum 10 years in prison. Post-2010, that threshold was raised to 280g, which resulted in this .... uhhh suspicious drug seizure graph. #OMGraph #iteachmath h/t @JohnHolbein1 econweb.umd.edu/~tuttle/files/…
pre 2010, pretty reasonable power law graph
post 2010, pretty reasonable power law graph, except for a huge spike right at the 280g threshold

Watch a teacher make roughly ~1,000 instructional decisions in about 45 seconds. Only a few of them are about the lesson but the lesson depends on ALL of them. This is one of the hardest things to explain about teaching to people who have never taught.

    Replying to @ddmeyer and @JohnHolbein1
That utterly implausible spike in 280g seizures, each one triggering a 10-year prison sentence? Would it surprise you to find out it disproportionately comprised Black & Hispanic people? #OMGraph #iteachmath

Bravest act by a comedian in any of our lifetimes: pinning the punchline of a joke to an adult crowd's recollection of FOIL.
Pissed off by Trump’s Lysol β€œjokes”? That’s not just emotion, it’s mathematic equation at work. @darryldarryl_ explains: x.com/darryldarryl_/…

Help me understand this ONE Venn diagram in my first year teaching and I would have been 10x more effective. This one right here.
"Answers that are correct" v "Answers that are useful for learning."

    (1) Teachers should prepare with purpose for their lessons. (2) Students should understand the purpose of their work by the end of class. Neither of those goals requires posted objectives at the start of class.
If math is supposed to be discovery-based, what do my fellow math minds think about posted objectives? Do they take away from the opportunity for students to figure things out? @ddmeyer @gfletchy @robertkaplinsky @joboaler #mathchat #math

When salary isn’t keeping up with inflation but there’s hot chocolate in the teacher lounge.
Teaching isn’t a job you hold. It’s an extension of your life’s purpose.

Never let your students forget that loads of math is just noticing stuff and making up names for it. #iteachmath
