Still can’t believe it. Our work on uncovering plagiarism in AI generated research received the outstanding paper award at ACL!!
Effort led by, and envisioned by the amazing @tarungupta360!
Remember this study about how LLM generated research ideas were rated to be more novel than expert-written ones?
We find a large fraction of such LLM generated proposals (≥ 24%) to be skillfully plagiarized, bypassing inbuilt plagiarism checks and unsuspecting experts. A 🧵
I am beyond thrilled to share that I'll be starting as an assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in April 2023.
I couldn’t have been luckier—I'm grateful for the support of many kind mentors, peers, students, friends and family members. (1/4)
I think this is a good time as any to remind people that many students from India (and many other countries) with accepted papers to @NeurIPSConf wouldn't be able to present because the US Visa situation is so backed up (the next available appointments are in Mar/April 2024).
Excited to end the year on a high: I passed my PhD defense today!
*Absolutely* loved my PhD years @LTIatCMU—I could have spent another 3 years! Major thanks to @zacharylipton, @gneubig, @professorwcohen for being wonderful advisors. [1/n]
I have been meaning to call out all the bullsh*t that @NirantK is all about! This thread does a good job.
This “Top 5 GenAI scientist” has never contributed anything to science! No one would even recognize him if he were to attend a serious scientific conference.
I am planning to reserve some time every week this semester to help undergraduate/masters students by answering any questions they might have around pursuing research.

Grateful to be one of the AI2050 fellows this year!
One of the most exciting things about the award is that it provides us with resources to bring together—and strengthen—a community of people interested in AI systems that are geographically and culturally inclusive.
Congratulations to Prof Danish Pruthi for being selected as an AI2050 Early Career Fellow🎊
Prof Pruthi joins a cohort of 19 Fellows and is the only Fellow selected from India.

Mitesh Khapra from @ai4bharat putting things in perspective about the scale of investment required for high-quality translation models for Indic languages.
I am looking for a few PhD/MTech (research) students for my lab at IISc Bangalore.
The institute-wide applications for these programs are now open (deadline: March, 23). Please email me if you have any questions.

Lastly, my choice to relocate back to India is influenced by my desire to contribute to India’s research and growth, and has little to do with issues immigrants face in the United States—my personal experience has been overwhelmingly positive. (4/4)
Preprint on evaluating explanations---we propose a student-teacher communication paradigm that measures the degree to which explanations from the teacher help the students simulate the teacher on unseen examples for which explanations are unavailable
