In Chinese & Japanese there's an expression 'A frog in a well never knows the vast ocean' based on the #Taoist story from Zhuangzi. It's a reminder to be humble & accept thay the world is vast & our knowledge limited, so we must not assume to know everything . #FolkloreThursday

In Japanese folklore, household objects that have served their owners for 100 years are rewarded by obtaining a soul. They become alive & self-aware & are thereafter known as tsukumogami. #MythologyMonday #yokai #ukiyoe 'A New Collection of Monsters' - Utagawa Shigekiyo, 1860.

Ohaguro Bettari (which means nothing but blackened teeth) is a Japanese yokai appearing as a beautiful woman who beckons men, hiding her face until they're close, then revealing a pale featureless face with huge blackened teeth & scaring them out of their wits. #FolkloreThursday

In Japan it's believed that some domestic cats develop magical powers as they age. They grow two tails & can shapeshift, sometimes taking on the form of their owner & living in their place. Known as nekomata they are a reminder to WATCH YOUR CAT CLOSELY. #FolkloreThursday #yokai
