My mother transitioned last night. She passed one wk & two days before her birthday, so I’m sharing this video of us dancing to one of our favorite songs—Native New Yorker—on her birthday last year. 🖤 I’ll be taking some time to bask in her glory and spend time with loved ones.

A literal army of NYPD officers standing in anticipation of the scheduled #GeorgeFlyod protest. We can’t even exercise our 1st amendment rights without the threat of militant force.

🧵: Today, the narrative has been that Black folks aren’t out here leading in the work—and specifically on #NYCBudgetJustice. Here are 10 Black folks whose organizing & leadership have paved the way for all the “new folks” to follow (in no particular order)...

🚨Today, I received a DM from a neighbor that I haven’t met before, and I am completely aghast. He told me that his wife received my absentee ballot, which had me so confused...because I just received my ballot in the mail. How could he have my ballot when mine just arrived?🧐 1/

🎉 We won! Together, we built the biggest, broadest, & most diverse coalition to champion a vision of equity, justice, and dignity for all of our neighbors. We are now more than 16K strong having received one of the highest number of votes of any Council candidate citywide. 1/

🚨Folks, this is serious. We need to cancel all unnecessary indoor gatherings, mask up, get boosted & be particularly cautious around our immunocompromised neighbors. I’m working with the city to identify additional testing sites in my district. Let’s be vigilant & not lose hope!
BREAKING: NY State just reported reported 21,027 new cases today. All-time record. 10,286 in New York City alone.

Raise your hand 🙋🏽if you or someone you love immigrated to #NYC from another country. We are the best city on earth because of immigrants - don’t get it twisted!

People are often shocked to hear I’d be the first gay Black woman elected in NYC in 2021. But I’ve seen firsthand why that is. The hoops we have to jump through. The reality of being both completely unseen & hyper visible. Hate, vitriol & disparagement. Patriarchy & misogynoir.

Yesterday, I announced my historic campaign to become the first openly gay Black woman elected to the New York City Council. ✊🏾🏳️‍🌈

This week I was honored to be sworn in to serve as the next Council Member representing the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Prospect Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and parts of Crown Heights & Bed-Stuy. 1/ 🎥: @willalatriste

Happy birthday to the original unbought and unbossed Queen of The People’s Republic of Brooklyn, Shirley Chisholm. We quite literally would not be here without you.
Shirley dared to run for President when everyone, including her own party and white feminists, told her not to. They mocked her then but laud her now so on her birthday today, show some love and respect for the real queen, Brooklyn’s own, Congresswoman Shirley Chilsolm 👑

So I called him & opened all 3 of my family’s absentee ballots, and here’s what I found: 🗳My ballot envelope had my mother’s ballot in it. 🗳My partner’s envelope had another neighbor’s ballot. 🗳My mother’s envelope had yet another neighbor’s ballot. 2/
