Traveling back to Germany is always sad. Things are dysfunctional, slow, and inefficient. If you point out a problem, people tell you there's either no problem or no solution.
Imo, losing the "This is Google"-spirit was far more detrimental than any WFH rules. I attribute this largely to a deemphasis on engineering excellence at the leadership level towards non-technical MBA-type leadership. MBA-type leaders focus on MBA-type problems.

"What do you do for a living?" is a terrible question to ask someone at a party. You have to be delighted at the answer, the "and you?" follow-up invites awkward comparisons, and it usually doesn't initiate an interesting longer conversation.
