I’m sharing my family’s battle with COVID in the hopes that it can raise awareness of the dangers to the most vulnerable among us, and nudge leaders to muster the courage to implement vaccine and mask mandates, right now. Lives are at stake. Thread.

Today it was a record-shattering 78F in Atlanta, 33F above the historical average. If that heat extreme happened in August, it would be 114F. Let 2022 be the year we get serious about the climate crisis. We can do it, together.

My 11-yr-old daughter last night, quietly: Mom, can we fix global warming next year? Me (heart breaking): No, we can't. The best we can do is slow it down. We need to be brave, and help each other see a different path, by walking it ourselves.

    3) Children are at the frontlines of this pandemic right now, and our leaders are refusing to follow science-based guidance to keep them and other vulnerable members of society safe. This is an abject failure of leadership. Vaccine and mask mandates MUST be implemented, now.

Here are some take-homes from our experience: 1) Surveillance testing may have saved a life, or the very least saved a family the horror we went through - please consider weekly testing at home through this surge (our rapids were 100% accurate - we have taken dozens!)

THIS is why I devote so much time to engaging K-12 students as a climate scientist. Straight out of my daughter's 6th grade textbook at @APSInman. @AtlantaPublic, we are failing our kids w this misinformation. #teachyourchildrenwell

On August 9th, my 10yo daughter tested positive on a surveillance test at her school, with no fever and no symptoms. Props to @apsupdate for mask mandate and surveillance testing, which is why her infection did not spread to any other family.

And we are so lucky. Incredibly, the virus did not infect anyone outside our family. Second, we both have jobs that allowed us to quarantine without loss of pay or employment – not everyone has those protections. And health-wise, we largely dodged a bullet (“long COVID” aside).

As a mom to four children, I've always known that kids could be a huge part of the climate solution. On the eve of the #schoolstrike4climate, I am humbled, I am inspired, and I am resolved. #Academics4ClimateStrikes

    4) Nobody "deserves" this. Having lived a minor version of our collective nightmare, I wouldn't wish it on anybody. We can have empathy and mutual respect while enacting and enforcing robust public health regulations.

My 7yo daughter: “It makes me feel good to help the planet.” Me: “Why?” Her: “Because if I help the Earth, then it will help me.” Me: “But how do you know that?” Her: “Because the Earth controls everything, even gravity.” So true. #outofthemouthofbabes

    It’s hot. It’s us. Let’s fix it.
Can you describe your research using only words of one syllable?

My course was much, much worse. My breakthrough infection saw fevers of 100-102F for five long days of flu-like symptoms. I lost all taste and smell. I was completely leveled. Once my fever broke, I developed respiratory symptoms that persist to this day.
