There is something so ugly about this and if you can’t see it then you need to pick up a history book

- What I would give to pick Lily-Rose Depp’s brain about this movie. She so clearly gets it. It makes her relationship to her role all the more remarkable. What she says here hits so close to home with what I took away from the film. I could listen to her talk on and on about it.
00:00 - Replying to @chrstinedaaemonLook contrary to people saying “FINALLY”, we DID have fluffy, pure sexless Respectable LGBT stories before Heartstopper. I read and watched them when I was 15. They did nothing for me in the long run. What was initial interest turned into unrelateable disconnect in my case
- Replying to @chrstinedaaemonIf these were written about a heterosexual teen couple you would rightfully see it as abstinence-pushing Christian purity rhetoric and so unrealistic to teen romance but this is apparently how the gays win acceptance
- Replying to @chrstinedaaemonLook, when you’re saying “FINALLY”, you are saying finally in terms of stories by white people about white people. People have pointed out that lgbt stores is not something only western audiences innovated; and the Heartstopper author just shit on them
- I’m losing my goddamn mind seeing so many people in book communities celebrate this. I genuinely had hoped that they didn’t really truly mean that they would be happy if people were being arrested over this stuff, that they meant “lock her up” as a joke. Either way, beyond bleak.that author got arrested for her ddlg book? about two adults?? a written novel???? arrested ??!!
- Replying to @chrstinedaaemonLook, I get if you’d rather not explicitly write sex scenes for your teen romance. But like the way you’ve been going about this is that the mere POSSIBILITY of queer teens wanting to have sex is unacceptable. One look at sex education effectiveness will tell you that’s bullshit.
- Replying to @chrstinedaaemonAnyways PLEASE pick up a fucking BL series and stop with this racist double standard bullshit. Plenty of BL have done non-explicit gay teen romance before; and they’ve done it without this weird abstinence culture influenced rhetoric
- Replying to @chrstinedaaemonI am saying this as a queer person; the books that stuck with me most through my sexual exploration as a teenager were the ones about teens my age going through sexual awakenings and exploration. It made me feel less deviant about my own desires.
- Replying to @chrstinedaaemonLearn about respectability politics for FUCKS sake
- They actually used the phrase “irredeemable” about what they’re banning…we’re at the point where major corporations are using the same lingo as like, teenagers with DNIs in carrds who put violent hate speech and “selfcest” under the same category of “irredeemable media”B&N getting rid of a shitton of erotic titles that “violate their content policy” is incredibly worrying. We already know how such content policies can lead to books by queer and/or BIPOC authors being flagged, hidden, or removed entirely. Alt text in thread below
- the whole “booktok romance is all slop and if you read it you’re poisoning your brain” thing totally falls apart if you’ve ever been in a literature class that required you to seriously analyze works that were considered lowbrow pulpy classics in their time
- Replying to @Youmaconabsolutely incredible timing here with this announcement given that someone is dying at this very moment because of Kyle’s actions.
