Economists (then): focuses most research on 5% of the world's population Economists (now): what if we look at what's happening to the other 95%? Old guard: whoa, whoa, whoa, why are you making everying about race, gender and class?? Those people aren't "the economy".

I am delighted to announce I will be joining @UChi_Economics as an Asst. Prof. after a post-doc at @BeckerFriedman. I feel so grateful for the many, many people in my life who made this possible. I have been so lucky, so many times.

Every year around grad school app season, this type of sentiment pops up... It is flat out FALSE and unnecessarily discourages people away from econ phds. Let's take a look at an example + data... 1/
The competition in Academic econ is so cutthroat at this point that if you don't know you want to get a PhD by 14 (and how to get one!) the odds are stacked way against you. It's a large part of the reason why the discipline is not diverse and why success is so hereditary.

By "sensible adults" you mean -- white men protecting a system in which they continue to profit off black labor and abuse black bodies.

Long story short -- if you love math/data and want to understand how people and societies work and how to make them better, there is a place for you in this field. Don't let the naysayers scare you away.

I wish people cared as much about the billions of people that have died (or continue to suffer) as a result of British colonialism as they do about not speaking ill of arguably the most privileged person to ever live.

I get this response ALL THE TIME from labor economists. Yes, I understand that institutions/constraints are different and you may be unfamiliar with the setting but the same is true about Sweden vs. Italy vs. Japan and yet labor econ has no problem jumping across those settings.

The funniest thing to me was talking to a labor economist about this paper and our experiments in online labor markets, who was very interested until I mentioned that it was in Nigeria, after which his eyes glazed over and he told me to talk to the 'development people' instead 😂

Gonna use this to teach omitted variable bias (Wellbutrin is used to treat depression, for those of you not familiar with it)
