🚨I am so excited to announce that I’m working with the @nytimes this year as one of the inaugural local investigations fellows! I’ll be looking at health care issues in Mississippi. 🚨 And after that I’ll be returning to the @statesnewsroom. 🎊🎊
We are thrilled to announce the inaugural class of the Local Investigations Fellowship. The journalists, who hail from five states, will produce signature investigative work focused on their state or region. nytco.com/press/introduc…

Really love this podcast episode. Mental health & terms like “crazy” often used to describe women doesn’t get discussed much in the #AAPI community. As a South Asian woman I know therapy is often a taboo subject. Cool to hear from @deepikapadukone on it

Surreal to see the Pink House in Jackson painted white. This clinic was at the heart of the Supreme Court case that overturned Roe v Wade. And now it’s being turned into a luxury consignment store in a highly gentrified neighborhood.

Evacuated from New Orleans last night and made it to Jackson, where as one could expect gas stations filling up and grocery stores packed. But I feel the community coming together- a nice couple just offered to pay for my gas. These are the times where I appreciate the south.

In April, Mississippi enacted the Pregnancy Resource Act. It gives $3.5M in tax credits to corporations for donations to “pregnancy resource centers.” These PRCs, which convince women not to get abortions, are pretty secretive. So, we started digging. 🧵

Very exciting! Post @nytimes fellowship, I'm covering health care nationally for @statesnewsroom and @stateline_news. I'll be focusing on the business of health care and environmental health mostly, but I am open to all pitches. ✉️schatlani [at] stateline. org. Please RT!

During a Mississippi health conference I can hear the exhaustion in the state epidemiologist's voice when he said: "Let's just not take any livestock medicine, guys." That was the response to a reporter asking about the variety of livestock medicine people are using for COVID

The weekly percentage of people with #covid19 in #ICE custody has doubled since June. And detainees say, they are suffering. My latest story for @NPRnpr.org/2021/08/13/102…

🚨 Last Friday was my last day at the Gulf States Newsroom! Stay tuned for my exciting next steps. 🚨 What I can say now though is that I'll be spending the next year investigating issues of healthcare in Mississippi. I'm so proud of what I've been able to accomplish at GSN 🧵

No comment on @NPR 's bias or lack of bias, but will say that public funding to NPR does more than just produce quality journalism. It employs hundreds of reporters and writers with loads of talent who cover hurricanes, tornados, local elections, etc for their local communities
