it's surprising that this is the case, but frontier labs are actually *understaffed* there's always an immense amount of low-hanging fruit in the short-to-medium-term, and borderline not enough people (or compute) to do it, hence the always-on intense work schedule and ruthless

Not to be defensive but jsyk, this is because Waymo temporarily blacklisted SF neighborhoods with active protests for the safety of the cars + passengers. It would be restored when things die down. It's not some accidental artifact of "equity" like you're insinuating

guy in the article comes in with just a high gpa and sat, complains about not getting into mit/caltech/harvard/pton where we've known for DECADES that you need way more than gpa and sat to qualify there, and is still going to a super good school (georgia tech) anyway ???
