It was kind of a blackpill for me when I realized that most of the great writing of the past would never have existed if it had been forced to go through the kind of editorial committee process that we've since made mandatory. So I wrote an essay about it for @hedgehogreview. 👇

I have only just found out that Jane Austen sent cross-written letters like a psychopath.

You have correctly identified the fact that the U.S. is not a direct democracy and was never intended to be.

So many people who are politically committed to denying, problematizing, or overturning every possible binary in human life remain stubbornly committed to the binary of oppressor/oppressed—and see all of history, all of modern society, all of geopolitics through that fogged lens.

Don't forget her sheer ahistorical stupidity. Did she ever actually believe that everyone besides Europeans "lived in perfect harmony" with nature? Does she believe it now? In another tweet she blames white people for syphilis, which the evidence suggests came from the Americas

If a woman as intelligent and fair-minded as you, in a relationship as stable and healthy as yours seems to be (hi Jarrett!) has never till now considered what the mental burden of being the backstop provider must be like, I can only imagine how far it is from most women's minds.

The cover of my copy of "Lolita" has a quote from Vanity Fair that calls it (I'm quoting from memory) "the only convincing love story of our century."

I love that "nice" derives from Latin and Old French words meaning "ignorant." Sounds about right.

Derek is low-key one of the worst people on this app. Deporting him would be legendary.
