When my children reached 16, I bought them 16 books for their birthday. Here are the three lists. Which brilliant books did I miss?

Sad to see how many people say they resent the paywall to read our Russell Brand investigation. It took 4 years. It took a team of top journalists, editors, lawyers and many more. Investigations are not cheap. But they are v important - and we should all support them.

That moment on a train when you politely ask a man to use headphones, rather than shout loudly into his phone with his friend, equally loudly, on speaker. He shouts at you - and then continues. And then a ticket inspector comes along and fines him for not having a ticket!

Here, at last, is the result of an investigation which began in 2019. Of the many bits that will shock you, it is this line that has been a worm in my brain: "Brand, then 30, sent a car to her secondary school to take her out of lessons and to his home, she says." She was 16

An ex-Tory councillor wins a £276m PPE contract...and, within months, upgrades from modest home in Stroud to a £1.5m Cotswold mansion with 100 acres of land. How is this allowed to have happened?!? Great reporting from ⁦@Gabriel_Pogrund⁩ 🌟

The new provost of @Eton_College in today’s @Telegraph He says most of his friends are Old Etonians - and if he meets somebody who did not go there “I do admit…that it counts against them slightly.” Was there not a candidate with a more open mind?

To all those people stockpiling, spare a thought for the elderly man who I just passed in the pasta aisle at Sainsbury’s. It was totally empty. He was very distressed as to why there was none left, having struggled to get to the shop with his walking stick and shopping trolley.

So, that’s an interesting result: In a poll of 12,939 @thetimes and @thesundaytimes readers, 70% think the UK should hold a 2nd referendum on EU membership.

Taken - without needing to zoom - from my sitting room window (currently doubling up as my office). That’s one brazen fox.

Quite a moment for Boris when his ex-employer, ⁦@Telegraph⁩, devotes this much of its Letters page to…trashing him.

What a man! To invent a ventilator that is being used to treat Covid patients, to speak "at least 8 languages" - and to be the father of a Hollywood superstar. Oh, and he made a film when he was 84 too. thetimes.co.uk/article/george…

Don’t miss one particular gem in tomorrow’s @thesundaytimes: 1,400 academics sign anti-Brexit letter (against 37 who started the pro-Brexit campaign last Sunday....). Credit to @stephenbleach, our acting letters editor.

The saddest story in this weekend's edition? The number of teenagers doing a modern language for A-level has gone into freefall Since 2013, German A-level -45% and French A-level -37%
