We were able to verify and locate two of the “re-education camps” (1+2) mentioned in the #KarakaxList. And we also located two other camps (3+4), using satellite images and governmental documents, including tender bids and financial plans.

The leaked #KarakaxList mentions at least 4 “re-education camps” that Uighur detainees were sent to in #Xinjiang. Together with @CherieChancy and @NaomiConrad, we verified and located the camps using satellite images and governmental documents and bids. (Thread)

Inside the industrial park we found both a “re-education camp” and a detention centre. The latter has visible security features like watchtowers and wire fences. Both are surrounded by what are most likely factories and also a police station. #KarakaxList

We had a closer look at the largest “re-education camp” mentioned in the leaked #KarakaxList which is based at the south-east corner of an industrial park. (Satellite imagery 26.11.2019).

In 2018, each building in the “re-education camp” was fenced off and watchtowers were added. As noted in the #ChinaCables, these are typical security features of “re-education camps” in Xinjiang. However, in 2019, the fences and watchtowers were removed- unclear why. #KarakaxList

The Tatmadaw labels the civilian protesters as "terrorists". We talked to three defectors of Myanmar's army. They left "because Tatmadaw is killing innocent civilians for no reason," they said.

This is a 🧵 about satellites 🛰️ and the differences between optical and radar satellites. Satellite imagery is getting more important in conflict areas as visual evidence, for verification and to get a better understanding of the situation on the ground. (🛰️ @Maxar)
