I've talked my way through many a disappointing day for @SomersetCCC over the years, but today was perhaps the worst: a young second team taking on a strong county 1st XI and getting hammered. Who's to blame for this farce? The ECB, for downgrading the 50 over comp to a sideshow.

Alec Stewart at the ⁦@CricketSociety⁩’s autumn lunch arguing that the advent of the 100 has shortened the English domestic season from six months to five, and suggests that if the 100 occupied 2 weeks rather than 4, a lot of the problems could be resolved. Good bloke!

What a game! What a win! County cricket at its absolute best. And for all the bravery of Tom Banton, the precociousness of Archie Vaughan and the enduring skill and perseverance of Jack Leach, this was a team effort by a great team, superbly led. #blackbird!!

BREAKING: 34 year old Sth African opening bowler Vernon Philander is reported - reliably - to have signed a 3 year Kolpak deal with Somerset. @bbcbristolsport @bbcsomerset @CharlieTaylor4

Both sensible and selfless of @tomabell1 to step down as captain. 7 seasons is long enough. But after he’s scored thousands more runs, he will be remembered as one of the great @SomersetCCC captains. Energy and enthusiasm unbounded. The very heart, soul and spirit of Somerset

Many thanks to all followers and listeners for lending us your ears during the season. As ever, it has been a pleasure and privilege to bring you the many joys and occasional sorrows of @SomersetCCC’s cricket. Here’s to next year!

Lovely to see spectators allowed on the outfield over lunch at the Oval. ⁦@SomersetCCC⁩ please note!

So it looks like @SomersetCCC and @Gloscricket will, eventually, get their own 100 franchise, God help us. Which will be called, I hereby predict, West Country Warriors. I’m afraid that those of us who love county cricket are fighting a losing battle @AnnieChave

Rather a sad note on which to end a very good, but not ultimately victorious season. Great captain’s performance today and great shame about the drop that denied him a first hat-trick. Many thanks to all listeners and followers. We’ll try again next year, God willing!

Only in England. Hottest day ever they said. Rain stopped play! ⁦@bbcbristolsport#bbccricket@bbcsomerset

Somerset should be proud of its cricket team. Great effort today. Beaten by weather, as much as by Essex, but big congrats to them. Thanks to colleagues, listeners and followers during what has been a memorable season for ⁦@SomersetCCC⁩. Here’s to next year!!

Oh, that was a sad and sorry end to a season that had promised so much and started so well. But it has had its happier moments as well, which I've been privileged to enjoy and describe. Warmest thanks to all followers and listeners, and here's to next year!

Blimey, that was close! Not ten minutes after the players came off it started to rain and didn’t really stop. Still a big win for @SomersetCCC, a fine all-round performance and a very happy birthday for Gibbo!!

To be able to call @SomersetCCC home on a glorious Spring evening, with @AnnieChave at my side, is cricket commentary heaven. And against Essex too. Never in doubt? There were moments, but we got there in the end. This win might just have set up the Championship season.
