WORD OF THE WEEK 💬 Flanking line — An organized lifting zone of cumulus and towering cumulus clouds, connected to and extending outward from the mature updraft tower of a supercell or strong multicell convective storm. Read more through the AMS Glossary: bit.ly/4hHQc8V
An idealized cross section of a mature supercell with some major features and wind flow patterns. Except for the rotating updraft (the definition of a supercell) not all of these features are necessarily present or visible in every storm. Photo credit: NOAA National Weather Service.

    Replying to @ametsoc
AMS believes the criticism of the Birmingham forecast office is unwarranted; rather they should have been commended for their quick action based on science in clearly communicating the lack of threat to the citizens of Alabama.

WORD OF THE WEEK 💬 Overshooting top — (Or anvil dome, penetrating top.) A domelike protrusion above a cumulonimbus anvil, representing the intrusion of an updraft through its equilibrium level (level of neutral buoyancy). More about overshooting top: bit.ly/4bL62Oz
Graphic shows some of the features to be found in a supercell storm. Every storm is different. Not all storms will display all of the features of a classic supercell. Photo credit: NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory.

The 2026 budget passback plan calls for eliminating NOAA Research, the scientific backbone that keeps weather forecasts, alerts, and warnings accurate and effective. This would have disastrous consequences. Read the AMS statement, in partnership w/@nwas: bit.ly/4cz2RtC

AMS thanks those who brought our attention by tweeting us today. Chris Robbins has not been an AMS member since 2018; however, we want to clarify that we do not condone violence of any kind. We will be looking further into this incident.

A #BulletinAMS paper suggests the 10-year “drought” of the strongest (EF5) tornadoes is likely due to stricter use of ratings, not changes in tornadoes. Compared w/the older Fujita scale, the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale makes it harder to qualify as an EF5: bit.ly/43aIIYr
