    Replying to @hamlinr1
I remember reading the ref letter of a former US professor of mine from the UK. I compared it to another letter he wrote for a white male friend. He called me "hard working," "obedient," and "studious." He called the white male friend "brilliant," "creative," and "extraordinary"

Wrote an op-ed on Sara Duterte and the PRC for @NikkeiAsia, an extension of my Marcos-China article 3 weeks ago. This was just published 4 hours ago and trolls have been commenting non-stop. Looks like there's post-election, overtime pay lol

Unconditional pass on my GBO. I guess I'm a "Dr" now. Feels anti-climatic but best kept secret is I was wearing my under armour sleepwear and I just put a blazer on

My paper, "How Chinese firms approach investment risk: strong leaders, cancellation, and pushback," just won the inaugural 2022 Aileen Baviera San Pablo Baviera Prize for the best China-SEA publication (2020-2021) by the Gradnas network /1

I'm wrapping up my 80,000 w dissertation & submitting it to @JohnsHopkins library tonight (still have two days left! so won't miss it). It's been a long road for me, but my work on China-SEA has really been shaped by my mom, even after more than decade after she passed away. /1

Sharing my paper at the @CarnegieEndow, where I examined two major Chinese projects in the Philippines (Kaliwa Dam & Chico River Pump). I argue that Manila successfully has bypassed regulations to pave the way for Chinese firms to break ground on projects so as to strengthen /1
Despite public perceptions, Philippine ruling elites with an eye on domestic politics, not Chinese actors, are often the culprits sidestepping social and environmental safeguards on infrastructure. Our latest #ChinaLocalGlobal paper, by @alvincamba: carnegieendowment.org/2021/06/15/how…

1/ Great to see my paper, "How Chinese firms approach investment risk: strong leaders, cancellation, and pushback," finally out. I've been a big fan of @RIPEJournal since my UCL days! This paper became the starting point of my dissertation.

Never been big on titles, "Drs" or hierarchy when dealing with people. State, media, military, students, or anyone at all. But when I deal with a tinge of disrespect, especially if it's about my race or age, I always have to remind them that it's "Dr." and I got it from Hopkins

While I don't disagree with the direction of the projects, this is a bit inaccurate. There is no termination of 6 BRI projects under Marcos. 2 out of the 6 projects, the Chico River Pump and the Kaliwa Dam, have been inaugurated or made substantial progress.
Dramatic reversal: Philippines announces full termination of 6 #BeltandRoad projects in favor of Japan and Western options. Why the Philippines is exiting the BRI, by AsiaTimes asiatimes.com/2023/11/why-th…

Just experienced my second anti-Asian hate crime. Some guy wearing a ski mask opened the window of his car and shouted "Get out of this country, you ******* virus." Maybe it's time to wear a jacket with the Philippine flag (okay, kidding on this) or stop my daily exercise routine

Went to Denver downtown the first time around. A white person shouted at me "got rice, hey you have some rice." Not a big deal coz I knew it was coming. But honestly so difficult to be a minority in this country. People often forget when institutions treat you homogenously.
