- The primary and “nail in the coffin” reason we know the hippocampus converts short term memory to long term is because a surgeon completely removed it from a man to stop him from having seizures. The man proceeded to spend the next 55 years waking up every day from the surgery.Share a piece of lore so horrifying it’ll end this trend
- Replying to @alchemyjirachiFor everyone saying 50 First Dates/Memento, he couldn’t get anything past short term memory. Which only lasts about 30 second on average. You could introduce yourself to him, walk away for a minute, come back, and he’d have no idea who you were. He lived in isolated moments.

- Replying to @p1usoulHe kept those, lost most memories starting 11 years prior to the surgery, though not because of the surgery. Part of the case study is about how learning muscle/implicit memory is different from episodic. He could get better at doing a mechanical task w/o remembering doing it
- Replying to @ReDDiTZzYes he didn’t remembering going under for the surgery but from what I remember learning, he still remembered planning for it. His retrograde amnesia also extended to 11 years prior and was believed to have been caused by the seizures and medication he took prior to the surgery.
- Replying to @urath_Wasn’t trying to say they weren’t similar (both are still anterograde amnesia after all), just highlighting how short his frame of existence really was. Because 15 minutes is thirty times longer than 30 seconds.
