We are deeply disappointed by the cannabis referendum results. However, if this campaign has shown us one thing it's that the current prohibitionist regime isn't working. Even the 'no' campaign was arguing that we need a health-based, decriminalised approach to cannabis.

MANIFESTO OF THE WAIKERIA UPRISING People Against Prisons Aotearoa has been provided with this, a manifesto stating the grievances and political purpose of the Waikeria Uprising.
Picture of Waikeria Prison with the text "Manifesto of the Waikeria Uprising" overlaying it.
Picture of the Manifesto of the Waikeria Uprising that says:

"We are not rioting.

We are protesting.

We have showed no violence towards Corrections officers - none whatsoever - yet they show up here in force armed with guns and dogs to intimidate us.

We are the ones that are making a stand on this matter for our future people. Showing intimidation to us will only fuel the fire of future violence. We will not tolerate being intimidated any more.

Our drinking water in prison is brown. We have used our towels for three straight weeks now. Some of us have not had our bedding changed in five months. We have not received clean uniforms to wear for three months - we wear the samer dirty clothes day in and day out. We have to wash our clothes in our dirty shower water and dry them on the concrete floor. We have no toilet seats: we eat our kai out of paper bags right next to our open, shared toilets.

These are only very few of the reasons for the uprising. We are tangata whenua of this"

Andrew Coster went on RNZ this morning to float arming frontline police with rubber-coated steel bullets. These are the weapons, which permanently disable 15% of victims and kill 3%, that he wants cops to use on Maori people. This is militarisation and we will fight it.

Today we mourn the passing of Moana Jackson and send our condolences to his whānau. Throughout his life, Moana made phenomenal contributions to te ao Māori and to the struggles for Tino Rangatiratanga and prison abolition.

We've received these revelations from a former Corrections officer about conditions in Waikeria Prison, confirming what those inside outlined in the Manifesto of the #WaikeriaUprising
The text "I worked in Waikeria, and can confirm not only the horrible conditions but also the bullying and abuse of prisoners." over a picture of a prison cell key.
The text "That job attracts two kinds of people: 1. Those who want to help create change and lead by example. 2. Bullies that have a need to feel superior and be in a position where they are able to assert control over others." over a picture of paperwork, a pen and a sandwich.
The text "My last Christmas, they didn't order enough toilet paper.. officers were just laughing at the guys telling them to use their hand." over a picture of toilet rolls.
The text "There is absolutely no reason that the needs of the prisoners shouldn't have been met. Prisons like that have no place and they will certainly never create change." over a picture of a pen.

These pictures show the atrocious conditions people in Waikeria Prison experience, including double bunking and minimal ventilation and sanitation. It's due to these and many other human rights violations that the #WaikeriaUprising has happened. From here: ombudsman.parliament.nz/resources/fina…

We grieve with our Muslim communities. White supremacy runs deep in New Zealand, and we will continue to do all we can to excise it.

People Against Prisons Aotearoa has been given these messages from prisoners in Waikeria describing the conditions that led to the present uprising. These protests are legitimate political acts aimed at calling attention to serious and ongoing human rights abuses.

It's great to see that the Justice Minister has decided to scrap the racist and unjust policy of paying duty lawyers extra to convince their clients to plead guilty. waateanews.com/2022/10/18/rep…

Every time New Zealand has tried boot camps, we have ended up with a cohort of traumatised and victimised children. This approach does not work. We need this money - $500,000 per child - spent on approaches that actually help people.

Brian Tamaki ordered his followers to carry out gay bashings to try and chase us out of public life. We cannot surrender to Destiny Church's terrorism. Join us and our trained and uniformed marshals this Sunday at 2pm in Albert Park to defend queer pride. papa.org.nz/2025/02/18/def…

We congratulate @Maori_Party for showing the courage to call for the abolition of our ineffective and Te Tiriti violating prison system and for establishing Tikanga Māori transformative, preventative and restorative justice systems. 1news.co.nz/2023/09/09/te-… #CareNotCagesNZ
