We denounce the creation of an Asian Hate Crime Task Force by the NYPD. We don't support any initiative that expands the power of police nor do we believe in carceral responses to address racist violence. Read the full letter & sign on here: bit.ly/copfreecommuniโ€ฆ
Pink and orange gradient over aerial view of flushing. Txt reads: We want cop-free communities. As members of the NYC
Asian American community, we denounce the creation of an Asian Hate Crime Task Force by the NYPD.

We do not support any initiative that expands the power of police nor do we believe in carceral responses to address racist violence.

purple and blue gradient over NYC chinatown buildings. Txt reads: Our communities face greater harm because of police.
The NYPD has a long history of perpetrating violence within Asian communities.

>> Religious and racial profiling of South Asian & Muslim communities

>> Harassing Asian immigrant workers

>> Cooperating with ICE to detain and deport our communities

>> Working with real estate developers & displacing low-income tenants
Blue and purple gradient over nyc chinatown background. Txt reads: We oppose the uses of hate crime legislation to expand systems of criminalization.

They do not lead to justice nor do they address the root causes of racial violence.

We reject the complicity and active participation of Asians in expanding policing.

Since the recent resurgence of uprisings in defense of Black Lives, we have seen pro-cop Asian โ€œcelebrityโ€ activists
co-opt the language of anti-racist organizing to increase policing in our communities.
pink and purple gradient over Flushing. Txt reads: We uplift Asian community groups in NYC that have long fought against the expansion of policing & prisons.

>> Defunding NYPD

>> Ending surveillance

>> Decriminalizing sex work

>> Opposing jails construction

We demand no more cops & no more cages in our communities.

We stand in solidarity with our sisters and siblings in Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Haiti. Itโ€™s imperative to discard narratives that focus on saviorship and white โ€œfeminismโ€.

We feel pain & loss in the wake of continued violent assaults in our communities. As we grieve, we fight. We need alternatives for safety. We refuse initiatives that expand a racist police state. We invite you reply & share local community safety initiatives & projects ๐Ÿ’“

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth โ€” so much of Asian Am activism & political engagement is inspired by Black radicalism & liberation movements. We owe so much to Black thought leaders whose work guides our vision of justice. (p/c Tropics of Meta)

Like many of you, we've been grappling with sadness, anger, and fear after hearing about the murder of Christina Yuna Lee. What kinds of support and care do you need right now? What kinds of spaces are you looking for? What conversations do you want to be having?
