Our first poll is out today! We are a new, undergraduate-led research group funded by @ISPSYale, focusing on what young people think about our democracy. Here are the highlights of what we found in our Fall 2024 Poll 1/🧵
Among voters overall, Kamala Harris leads by 1%: 47-46. Harris leads 56-36 with young voters. Compared to 2020, Harris has gained the most ground with Asian voters, men, and seniors. She has lost the most ground with Black voters.
Young voters were notably opposed to the U.S. continuing military aid to Israel. While voters overall were evenly divided, with 44% both supporting and opposing the continuation of aid, 62% of young voters favored ending military aid, compared to only 22% who opposed doing so.
Young voters are more liberal than the electorate on social issues. The biggest gaps were on transgender rights. Protecting transgender rights: +13.3 overall, +41.1 with youth. Banning public school teachers from talking about sexuality and gender: +2.9 overall, -23.1 with youth.
On economic policy young voters' top issue is increasing clean energy funding (+63.3 vs. +41.1 overall). They favor breaking up monopolies (+60.6 vs. +49.7 overall) but are open to trading with China. Voters overall back more domestic oil drilling, young voters oppose it.
Young voters backed Supreme Court term limits (69.6%), parties moderating by ignoring activists (62.5%), and paper ballots (62.1%) as ways to reform democracy, but they don’t want to "lower the temperature" politically.
