    I can't put into words how devastated and shocked I am to hear that one of the brightest lights in this world, Rachel Held Evans, has died. I have been so obstinately hopeful since she got sick and this is completely shattering. I love you so much, Rachel, and I am so sorry.

    Politics aside, it's truly remarkable that an openly gay man who speaks passionately about his Christian faith garnered as much support as he did in his presidential bid. It would've been inconceivable less than a decade ago, and in an all-too-dispiriting time, it is hope-giving.

    The first time I served communion was at Rachel’s invitation four years ago. Serving it again at her funeral yesterday was an honor I will treasure for a lifetime. In life and death, that’s who she was—always bringing people to the table and assuring them that they belong.

    Sending love to LGBTQ people who are feeling lonely & alienated from family this Christmas. You deserve to be fully known and fully loved, and even if your family is falling short of that, please know that God loves you as you are—and that the baby Jesus was born for you, too. ❤️

    Three months ago today is when we lost @rachelheldevans. It's still hard to believe and to accept. On this weekend of wrenching pain & violence, I am missing her voice and her light in the world so very much. Love you, Rachel, and sending love and care to your family today. ❤️

    Crying looking at the top books today. All of Rachel Held Evans' books are in the top 30, and "Inspired" is right up there with @MichelleObama. I so want to congratulate Rachel. But even in her absence, her words are still very much being heard. May her influence only grow!
