Did you know that the 10th century Ismail Samani Mausoleum in Bukhara, Uzbekistan is the architectural model for the Mazar-e-Qaid in Karachi, Pakistan, the final resting place of Muhammad Ali Jinnah?
Happy birthday, Samarkand! 18 October is the official Day of Samarkand, the Pearl of the East. The @UNESCO World Heritage Sites are the highlight not only of a trip to Uzbekistan but of any journey along the Silk Road.
Two of my favourite buildings, one inspired by the other, and built more than 1,000 years apart. The Samanid Mausoleum in Bukhara, and the Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi. They’re the final resting places of two important historical figures, Ismail Samani & Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Did you know that there are now more than 2,350 family run guesthouses in Uzbekistan? These are my favourite places to stay because you get to experience warm hospitality and your money goes straight into the local economy.

This Sunday I’m dreaming of crossing Uzbekistan on the Afrosiyob, the high speed train which connects Tashkent with Samarkand, Bukhara, and Navoi, and will soon reach Khiva, too. It’s a cheap, comfortable, and environmentally friendly way to explore the heart of the Silk Road.
