🎉European day of languages - celebrating plurilingualism & the beauty of languages! Check out fab ideas & resources on edl.ecml.at or bit.ly/3Z0Gh6x to discover more about the diversity of languages & cultures in Europe, & where languages will take you! 🎉
Many congratulations from @UCFLangs to @charlesforsdick on his appointment as @BritishAcademy_ Lead Fellow for Languages - we v. much look forward to working with him on 'The Revival of Language Learning' discussed in his feature article published today 👇
Tomorrow we will ask the General Council at our AGM to approve our name change to UCFL (University Council For Languages). After a lengthy consultation process, the overwhelming advice has been that Modern Languages must let go of the ‘Modern’.
Today @UCFLangs will be in the House of Lords @APPGML explaining why translation and interpreting courses are very far from ‘Mickey Mouse degrees’ and why low pay in the industry needs addressing. Academia must work with industry and government to plug the skills gap.
Dear Rt Hon. Damian Hinds,
I am writing to you in my capacity as the Chair of the Universities Council of Modern Languages (UCML), with the support of colleagues from our Steering Group.
.@UCFLangs is deeply concerned by news that @UniKent is considering restructuring or closing multiple humanities departments, including modern languages. We urge management to consider how it can maintain languages provision, & offer our support & advice to design a way forward.
Devastated to hear from colleagues at @UniKent that 58 jobs are at risk across the Arts & Humanities and elsewhere, including Music & Audio Tech; Art History; English Lang & Linguistics; Comp Lit; Philosophy; Religion & Ethics; Modern Languages. @ArtsandHums@UCFLangs@ILCS_SAS
"Modern Languages are more important since Brexit than ever". Baroness Garden, Vice Chair of @APPGML, speaks out for student mobility & asks to guarantee the future of languages learning, raising the issue of Turing funding & the problems it creates for students, HE & WP.
Watch Baroness Garden, Vice Chair of the APPG ML, speak in the Lords yesterday about issues with the Turing programme in Higher Education, particularly for modern languages, with reference to the @BritishAcademy_ and @UCML :
