“Every surgeon carries within, a small cemetery, where from time to time we go to pray – a place of bitterness and regret, where we all must look for an explanation for our failures.”
René Leriche, La philosophie de la chirurgie, 1951

Hello 🇺🇸! We’re cancelling surgeries for cancer & ❤️ disease & other important stuff because we need beds for CoVid patients! People we know & love are going to die unnecessarily until we get #COVID19 under control. Let’s do our part 😷 💉 🧬
For a bit of happiness here, my stepdad started courting my mom after both losing spouses of 50 years in agonizing ways. Now my phone pings at random times with pictures of 2 older folks being happy in places near and far.
My nearly 80 yo mom just dropped some ancient wisdom: “don’t waste any time worrying how bad you look in pictures now, in a couple years, you’ll wish you still looked that good.”
On 9/11/01 I was helping with a complex case that took all day while the events unfolded. People kept running in and out of the room and the surgeon finally said, “We’re all a mess, the world is a mess, right now we have to save this one person.” I think about about that a lot.
