- Budding journalists: It’s obviously exciting to feel career progress. But you don’t have to work @nytimes or @washingtonpost or @CNN or other names to be doing worthy work. Journalism is important and needed everywhere. Know that the world needs your passion.
- Here’s to all of the journalists who never get bylines. They’re never featured on TV or radio. They don’t do the conference circuit. But day after day, their edits, production, tech expertise, digital savvy and support work serve as the connective tissue to this whole business.🍻
- Budding Journalists: It's easy to fill your story with quotes. It's harder to paraphrase what people say, adding in your own context and clarity. Yet the latter makes for much better storytelling. Save your quotes for when others say it better than you ever could.
- Budding journalists: Everyone wants to hit home runs early in their career. But most newsrooms will need you to hit lots of singles. That may not sound so grand, but that's often how you gain experience and trust, as well as opportunities to take those home run swings.
- Budding Journalists: You don't need to take down an institution to make a difference in the lives of readers. Impact comes in all sizes. Don't underestimate the influence a short feature, or a 600-word news story, or a well-done Q.& A. or even a brief, can have on someone's life.
- Budding Journalists: We will soon open applications to the 2022-2023 New York Times Fellowship. The class will include reporting, data, design, visual, photo, audio and opinion positions. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience. Fellows receive salary and benefits.
- Hi friends. I will do a Twitter live stream on Friday 11/16 at 2:30 p.m., New York time to answer your questions about the @nytimes Fellowship. Ask me on this thread and I will try to get to it on the stream. Application deadline: 11/19. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
- Budding Journalists: Take in today. Understand with absolute clarity the role that journalism plays in our democracy. Let it guide and inspire you and give you courage. May it be your North Star.
- Budding journalists: I know careers can seem slow. Remember: 1) The world needs you. 2) Journalism is competitive. Accepting that is both key to getting ahead, as well as being okay when you don't. 3) Your career is built over years, not months. Have patience even as you plan.
- Some journalism advice as we head into the weekend: Make time to rest. Step away if you can. Recharge in healthy ways. Your best work happens when you're fresh, alert and have the perspective that comes from living your life.
- Budding Journalists: Good writing is much more than words. It's pacing. It's organization. It's relevant detail. It's the art of building tension and holding interest. And it's the originality of the story idea itself. Many stories have some of these elements, but few have all.
- Budding Journalists: Own up to mistakes. We all make them (me more than most). Swallowing pride and admitting fault can be tougher than we think. But humility unearths our deepest values and desires like nothing else. May what we find ultimately bring out our best.
- Students of color: The @nytimes Student Journalism Institute is looking for well-qualified applicants! Work directly with some of the best journalists in this all-expenses-paid journalism boot camp. The particulars: nytimes-institute.com/about-the-inst…
