I have new followers time for another about me: I post about Ukraine, work as a hospital chaplain, opposition to Christofascism, random things, my stage 4 cancer, death. I have little patience for despair or dooming. There is work to do, evil to fight. Death and evil won't win.

Waiting to compassionately extubate a COVID patient until their 7 year old could read them one last bedtime story so, "Daddy can sleep and not be scared." This is the normal now. Endless death and suffering. Is it urgent enough for you?

My wife was intubated earlier this morning. The hope is she won't need to be for long. My wife has intubated and cared for countless COVID patients. I've provided spiritual care to COVID patients and their families. To be on the other side of this is both scary and surreal.

So it looks like I'll come away from Omicron with a few "souvenirs" -Diabetes -Longterm anticoagulants -2 inches less small intestine. -20 percent reduced lung function. (Likely will resolve) So clearly letting it tear through populations is just fine. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

My sister put in her 3 week notice today. She's been an ED nurse for 32 years. House Sup for 20. Worked Harborview ED in the 90s. Been at critical access hospitals in Iowa for 20 years. COVID didn't break her. The selfishness and suffering did. She loves nursing. She's broken.

Back in the hospital. COVID wasn't done with me. Tuesday night woke up with SOB and chest pain. Had a not-so-fun ambulance ride. Long story short I have a sizeable PE. Vascular complications aren't uncommon with COVID. Tell me again how COVID is a cold and Omicron is mild.

A month ago a patient buried a grandkid that died from COVID. A week later they buried their daughter. Two weeks ago they and their spouse felt unwell after babysitting another grandchild with a "little cold." All tested +. Their spouse died last week. They died tonight.

My colleague spent an hour consoling the child of a COVID patient who was intubated that it wasn't their fault their parent got sick. Family was careful and known to be. Kid caught COVID at school. So please tell me how in-person school atm is better for children.

Our now vaccinated neighbors have been kicked out of their church because someone outed their vaccine status. They are crushed and grieving.

Turns out my wife's Dr. doesn't have to do the appeal today. Wife called our insurance company and just calmly asked for the denials in letter form so when she dies from liver failure a paper trail will be started for legal purposes. Did wonders. Liver biopsy is approved.

COVID is still killing people. It killed another Iowan today. She was exposed after a friend visited her and friend "just" had allergies. She was in her 80s and still had alot of living to do. She masked. She got vaccinated. Wife and I sat with her as she died. She was my aunt.

My wife is home. It has been a long journey from her first symptoms on November 1st. She was given a 20% of survival when intubated. 50% when placed on ECMO. She has a ways to go, but took the first steps into the next phase of recovery by walking into our home.

People don't realize how fucking done healthcare workers are.
