How can you achieve the perfect weld with #ElectronBeamWelding? Explore how our engineers overcame the challenges with #EBWelding of the complex design probe: bit.ly/3RukVdu #Copper #Alloy #Welding
TWI was contacted by Cambridge Aerothermal who requested assistance with #ElectronBeam #welding a novel design of temperature sensor probe for industrial gas turbines.

The design of the probe is complex, with the use of several small components made from various materials, such as stainless steel and #copper beryllium, which required the careful application of electron beam (EB) welding.

The complicated design of the probe, coupled with material thicknesses from 2mm to less than 1mm, demanded a precise welding process with minimal heat input and distortion.

TWI was honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales to our headquarters near Cambridge, UK on 23 June 2022.
The Governor, who is the representative of Queen Elizabeth II in the State of New South Wales, began her five-year tenure on 2 May 2019.

TWI’s Director of Membership and Strategy, John Hill hosted the visit, which included Mr Dennis Wilson, the Governor’s husband, Mr Michael Miller, Official Secretary to the Governor, and Lieutenant Commander Robert MJ Valler, the Governor’s Aide-de-Camp.

During the visit, we discussed ways in which TWI can help the work of companies and organisations working in defence, nuclear and the emerging hydrogen economy in New South Wales.

We look forward to continuing a productive relationship assisting businesses across New South Wales with their industrial and engineering challenges.

We are delighted to be part of a consortium that has secured funding from @innovateuk for the PROTECT project. The project has the #vision to manufacture a multi-material #crashbox that enables tailored behaviour during low-speed vehicle accidents. #composites #innovation
The project has the vision to manufacture a multi-material crash-box that enables tailored behaviour during low-speed vehicle accidents.

A crash box is one of the safety features of any vehicle and aims to improve crash performance in low-speed accidents. Conventional crash boxes exhibit high-peak force and have no way of controlling the rate of deceleration following a crash. Composite alternatives are limited in use due to unpredictable failure.

PROTECT is developing, testing and designing an innovative new crash-box with better impact energy-absorption capabilities; enabling minimal damage to road user, vehicles and vehicle-occupants in low-speed collisions.

Riversimple are building highly efficient hydrogen fuel cell cars. They are using composite rather than steel chassis for their vehicles, because light weighting is key to efficiency, so they are a natural partner for this project.

The Latest Development and Progress with MOTIVE Project...

The design and integration of #aircraft pneumatic bleed #AirValves is becoming ever more challenging due to the aggressive environment in which the valves must operate close to the aircraft engine.

Members of the MOTIVE project consortium met on 26 April 2022 to discuss the latest developments and progress with the project.

Queen Elizabeth II: 1926-2022 We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We send our sincere condolences to the Royal Family at this time and our thoughts are with them and the country as a whole.
Her Majesty showed support for the work of the engineering profession during her reign and her dedication to public duty was admired not just across the United Kingdom but across the world, including in the Commonwealth.

The Queen was a constant for many in a fast-paced and ever-changing world, demonstrating calm decorum and acting as an inspiration for many who have known no other sovereign in their lifetime.

TWI Ltd would like to pay tribute to her unique and extraordinary contribution over so many years and wish a long and successful reign to His Majesty King Charles III.
