    For weeks the Sri Lankans have been peacefully demonstrating because they are desperate and suffering. To avoid an escalation the causes have to be seriously and credibly addressed now. It‘s hard to see how a state of emergency could help in any way.

    Entire Swiss🇨🇭Embassy lawn transformed into a vegetable garden by the staff with great support of renowned🇨🇭company @A_Baur_Co . In times of suffering and on our National Day we want to set an example, show solidarity and will donate our garden produce to some of the poorest.

    Follow developments at Galle Face with deep concern. The right to peacefully demonstrate and express opinions remains important. We urge for restraint and full access of medical services. Sri Lanka needs mutual respect and cooperation to get on.

    We condemn the violent attacks on peaceful protesters and urge the Government to hold the perpetrators of violence to account. Furthermore we appeal for calm and the continuation of the democratic and non-violent process to ensure the resolution of this crisis + safety for all.

    Law and order: Yes. But also freedom of expression and exercise of democratic rights. Switzerland🇨🇭is concerned about the use of the PTA during recent arrests and urges the Sri Lankan 🇱🇰 government to comply with its international commitments before the UNHRC September sessions.
