EXCLUSIVE: Lebanon's central bank is counting its gold for the first time since...probably the 1960s, when it was initially bought. Government employees have so far counted 20 % of the estimated 13,000 ingots and 700,000 coins in the bank's vaults.

Beirut is a ghost city today. Shops are closed, streets are nearly empty, and there's just miles and miles of cars parked on the side of the road, waiting for fuel. Complete paralysis.

These headlines are misleading. We're going from around 1 hour to 0 hours of state-powered electricity a day. In my Beirut neighbourhood it now costs nearly $200/month to be hooked to a private generator that runs max 13 hours a day.

Update: I just spoke to the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Lebanon Shani Calyaneratne Karunaratne on the phone. She said this controversy is "absolutely shameful". "We gave this tea to the President and he can do whatever he wants with it as long as the people who get it are Lebanese".

Egypt donated 125 tons of glass to #Lebanon today to rebuild after the #Beirut blast. This is the first donation of this kind to be made directly to the Ministry of Industry. The Egyptian ambassador told me that the distribution of the glass will be "transparent".
