PUBLICATION DAY! My book on the Afghanistan war was 8 years in the works and it's surreal to finally share it with you. TWENTY YEARS tells the story of the war through the people it affected the most: young Afghans with very different lives and fates bookshop.org/p/books/twenty…

Extraordinary lack of basic fact checking. Iran has not sentenced 15,000 protesters to death, as a number of celebrities and political leaders are saying. Here are the facts as we know them: #IranProtests

Saturday morning in Kabul: from today, Afghan boys from grade 7 are allowed to return to school. Girls are not. By not permitting girls to return to school, the Taliban have de facto banned girls’ secondary education for the 1st time since their regime in the 90s #Afghanistan

I have lived in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Lebanon. I have never seen protesters carry guns.
Contingent of heavily armed individuals in back of an old military vehicle just showed up. They said they’re all independent. No affiliation.

Finland was always clear-eyed about Russia. For decades, it has stockpiled essentials, put 1000s of civil society leaders thru defense courses to boost “psychological resilience” and built underground shelters that can house 4 million ppl. My latest:

One hospital in Kabul, the Wazir Akbar Khan hospital, said it alone had received 145 dead bodies. The official death toll still stands at 90. #KabulAiport #Afghanistan

Let’s recap how astonishing the collapse of Afghanistan has been: before last week, the Taliban had only captured one major city since 2001 - Kunduz in 2015 - and only for a few days. Now, in the span of 8 days, they have seized everything but Kabul.

So many explosives/war experts on Twitter today. If you wonder why the actual journalists in #Beirut haven’t yet said what caused the blast, it’s because they’re busy trying to find out before tweeting about it. In other words, doing their job.
