Listen to #bts @bts_bighit. We need your help to address the rise of anti-Asian hate so that we can continue to advocate for meaningful change. If you or someone you love experiences a hate incident, please report it at
It was great to meet with you this week at the White House, @bts_bighit. The rise in anti-Asian hate crimes requires all of us to stand up, speak out, and give hate no safe harbor. Thanks for all you’re doing. It matters.

The reported shootings of Asian American women on Tuesday in Atlanta is an unspeakable tragedy – for the families of the victims first and foremost, but also for the AAPI community — which has been reeling from high levels of racial discrimination.

Our statement on the devastating events in Monterey Park. #StopAAPIHate
“After a day of celebration, we are waking up to a nightmare. This is devastating beyond words. We cannot imagine the pain that so many families are experiencing today. At Stop AAPI Hate, many people on our staff know this community well and feel connected to it. Our hearts are with the loved ones of all those whose lives were taken, those who were injured, and the countless others who were shaken by fear that no one should have had to experience.

Our community has faced so much tragedy and trauma over the last several years. This tremendous act of violence, on one of the most important days of the year for many Asian Americans, at a place where Asian American families come to gather and celebrate, is sending shockwaves through our community."

Few details have been released, including whether or not the shootings were related or motivated by hate. But right now there is a great deal of fear and pain in the Asian American community that must be addressed.

A few trends worth noting: 💬Verbal harassment makes up 68% of hate incidents. Physical assault makes up 11%. 👩🏻Women are 2.3 times more likely to report hate incidents. 🌉45% of reports originated in California, making it the first in the nation for hate incident reports.

We are heartbroken by the police shooting of Victoria Lee and deeply alarmed about the broader threat of police violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders — including people experiencing a mental health crisis. Read our full statement below. 👇
26-year-old Korean American Victoria Lee was suffering a mental health crisis when her family called 911 asking for medical assistance. Instead, she was shot dead by police. Stop AAPI Hate sends our deepest condolences to Victoria’s loved ones and support their calls for a thorough investigation.
We are outraged by this aggressive response from police. Victoria’s family emphasizes that her death was preventable and that she did not pose a threat. Concerned for Victoria’s safety around police officers, her mother and brother said they specifically requested an ambulance for transportation to a hospital rather than law enforcement. They repeatedly asked the officers not to enter the apartment — but instead, they say the police forcefully kicked in the door and shot Victoria almost immediately. The ambulance reportedly did not arrive until after she was already shot. We are also deeply alarmed about the growing threat of police violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. In the last five months alone, Nyah Mway of Utica, Win Rozario of Queens, and Yong Yang of Los Angeles were killed by police. In two of those cases, the victims were also experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental health is a serious problem among AA/PI communities as well as with Black, Indigenous,

Our statement in response to the mass shootings in #MontereyPark and #HalfMoonBay:
“There is no way to describe the overwhelming loss of life that has taken place over the past few days, and its impact on the Asian American community, the Latino community, the farmworker community and the communities of Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay. We are in mourning. Our immediate priorities involve supporting victims and communities through our local coalition members.

After nearly three years of attacks targeting the Asian American community, these shocking incidents have compounded the pain, fear and trauma that so many of us are feeling across California and across the country. We have long dealt with multiple forms of hate and violence, coming from outside, within and among our communities, and the identity of the shooters in both of these recent massacres does not and should not delegitimize or diminish our pain and fear."

The motive is unclear, but no matter why or who, the undeniable truth is that Asian communities are hurting from this mass shooting. As a group that represents Asian Americans, it’s important to acknowledge moments of shared pain. We see you, we hear you & we will heal together.
