As a principal, I’m supposed to be an “instructional leader.” But I told our teachers this week, that I don’t know how to do that in the middle of a pandemic. Right now is not the best time to talk about programs, plans, data points, and “best practices.” It is time to support.

Here's to all the teachers who are flying under the radar... not getting much attention. Their engaging lessons aren’t on Twitter. Their cool interactions with kids aren’t captured on YouTube. But they’re still crushing it. And they’re making a difference for a lot of students.

You don’t have to be an administrator, grade level chair, or department head to be a leader in you school. Your title doesn’t matter. You just need to care about making it better. Passion and commitment can transform any culture.

Not all your students come to class wanting to learn… but they all come wanting to belong. And when they feel like they belong… they’re much more likely to learn.

Schools do not thrive because of programs or plans… they thrive because of the passionate educators in the building.

COVID doesn’t stop our teachers. It makes their job much, much harder. But it doesn’t stop them. They don’t stop caring. They don’t stop delivering. They don’t stop making an impact.

Classroom management is not about having the right rules... it's about having the right relationships. #kidsdeserveit

My 13 year old daughter has talked for several years about how much she loved her 5th grade teacher. I asked her what she liked about her. Her response: “She liked US!” So simple… yet so profound. Kids gravitate to the teachers that like them. They can tell.

Something I’ve noticed about good teachers… is that they want to be better teachers.

If you’re a teacher… don’t assume your students know you care about them. You gotta show ‘em… every day. If you’re an administrator... don’t assume your teachers know you support them. You gotta show ‘em… every day.

5 tips for building class climate: 1)Talk to kids when they walk into class. 2) Learn 1 thing about each student. 3) Praise publicly and criticize privately. 4) Apologize when needed. 5) Don’t take yourself too seriously.

When I walk into a school, and it becomes obvious to me that the adults enjoy working there, I immediately suspect it’s a good place for students. Strong staff morale reflects a strong culture… and that’s an environment that is good for kids… and for their learning.

Some parents judge schools by the test scores. But there are a lot of parents who judge schools by the attitude of their child when they get home in the afternoon. We need to be working to raise student achievement... but we also need to be creating good experiences for kids.
