Incredible to say it, but we are discussing the consent of a new deep coal mine in the UK, despite all that has been said in recent years about the phase out coal. This is a very bad decision – supporting a technology of the past, with a very poor prospectus for new UK jobs.

Not a good decision. We’ll say more tonight.

In my house, I ‘urge’ my kids to put their shoes on before I later ‘request’ that they do so (expressing my alarm and utmost concern). But in the end, I usually have to ‘demand’ it.

This is an extraordinary letter (and extraordinarily well-written). This is @BlackRock Chairman and CEO Larry Fink on how climate change is driving "a profound reassessment of risk and asset values". Recommended reading. blackrock.com/uk/individual/…

Some news *gulp*. I’ve decided to move on from @theCCCuk after six amazing years and more than 100 publications. I’ve worked on energy and climate policy for 13 years now. I joined the civil service 20 years ago. I’d like to see a different side to the climate challenge.

I worry that Microsoft Teams will ultimately drive an increase in global greenhouse emissions as people embrace long-distance travel to flee its comprehensive terribleness.

Well, that’s a wrap after more than six years at @theCCCuk. It has been a wonderful privilege. The handle of this account will change shortly, but please continue to follow. I’ll keep tweeting on climate when I move across to @thecarbontrust from next week. 🙏

Today we publish @theCCCuk annual report on progress in reducing UK emissions. We reflect on policy progress in a year that brought the UK’s first recorded 40C day and spiralling fossil fuel costs. And there’s a reality check on the acceleration needed for 2030 and beyond. 🧵

Happy #netzero day. Today we hear that the UK Government will legislate for a net-zero emissions target. It’s an important moment. Bold steps are needed to deliver it and some difficult decisions lie ahead, but today’s a good day @theCCCuk Back to the tough scrutiny tomorrow...

Absolutely brilliant news for Glasgow (the best wee city in the world). Delighted to see my home city host COP26 next year. All the more reason to get cracking on some world leading policies to match the Net-Zero ambition.

“We’re not even on track to hit the old target before net zero was set.” The government's official climate change advisers have warned that there’s a “substantial gap” between government's ambition for net zero emissions and the lack of policy to deliver it.
