A new chapter for the museum has begun 🕯️🍶🌾🙏🏾
We are now closed for a period of essential maintenance and repair work ahead of a major redevelopment project – subject to funding.
The museum is due to reopen in 2028
THIS is history. Edward Colston, who was a was a 17th century slave trader, has his statue in Bristol, pulled down. This generation is not messing around ✊ #BlackLivesMatter
Once our doors can safely reopen, we welcome the three writers of this article to come up north, and visit us. We've been here since 2007 👋and do exactly what you've outlined in the article...history of transatlantic slavery both in a historic and contemporary context...
Calling all future budding historians! Please don’t let David Starkey’s awful, racist comments put you off pursuing an education or career in history. We need you - now more than ever.
A reminder that these appalling views still exist. Ignorance is NOT an option.
🌟NEWS 🌟 Thrilled to announce that we've been awarded £9.9m from @HeritageFundUK as part of the #HeritageHorizonAwards. We can now finally realise our ambitions of creating more gallery space, new and much-needed exhibition space..AND our own entrance 😄 youtube.com/watch?v=qMZs2P…
Taking a moment to uplift these kings. Your actions and behaviour on and off the pitch is a thing of beauty. You are the role models our younger generation need.
We celebrate you.
Thank you @MarcusRashford@BukayoSaka87@Sanchooo10@sterling7#ThisIsEngland
We are greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Benjamin Zephaniah.

Standing in support with our friends at @nationaltrust who are looking at their collections, displays and objects in a transparent and honest way. This is progress. This is honest curatorial work. We will help where we can to ensure this part of history is documented correctly.
Many of the places we care for have direct or indirect links to slavery, including objects made from materials obtained by forced labour.
Today, as we mark the @UNESCO Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, we take a closer look at these materials.
Thank you to everyone who has signposted our museum to @guardian. Your support hasn't gone amiss and we are grateful that this has raised awareness of our museum and the message we want to send out. For those interested, take a virtual tour of our museum💚

“Imagine what it’s like as a Black person to walk past a statue of somebody who enslaved your ancestors.”
Powerful words from @SadiqKhan as another statue of a slave trader is removed.
It’s a sad truth that much of our wealth was derived from the slave trade - but this does not have to be celebrated in our public spaces.
Tonight, the statue of slave trader Robert Milligan no longer stands at West India Quay. #BlackLivesMatter
It has been quite a 24 hours, where we saw historical scenes in Bristol last night. Here are our thoughts on this moment - and why we need to teach this painful past, and not just forget about it 💜
