I was pepper-sprayed then arrested last night by Minneapolis PD even after identifying myself as a reporter MULTIPLE times: Cop 1: *checks press badge as I’m on the ground* Cop 2: “Roll on your side, Mr. journalist.” Cop 3: *loads me in the car, sees my press badge and shrugs*

“Do you read fiction?” I do. I read American history written by white people.

Today is the National Day of Mourning for Indigenous peoples all across this land. We also call it “Un-thanksgiving.” On this day, we as Natives celebrate our resiliency & that we are still here. The U.S. tried to kill every Indigenous man, woman, and child…but we’re still here.

“Squaw” is what the white man call a Native female child they desire for sex. NPR won’t say this. But you should know.
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland formally declared "squaw" to be a derogatory term Friday and ordered a task force to find replacement names for valleys, lakes, creeks and other sites on federal lands that use the word. n.pr/3nx811h

There's never been a Native American state governor. There's never been a Native woman elected to Congress. In 90 yrs, few Native actors have been invited to the Oscars. 2018: 1 is running for gov, 2 Native women are running for Congress, and 1 Native was invited to the Oscars.

“Indians?” No. “American Indians?” No. We’re not from India. “Native Americans?” Can’t be. We predate America the nation. “So what are you?” We’re Lakota, Dakota, Ojibwe, Osage, Rarámuri, Tulalip, Diné, and so many more, and every nation & tribe, sans borders, are indigenous.

A sculpture in Ireland honors the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw collected donations of $170 (the equivalent of $6,000 today) and sent it to the Irish during the Great Irish Famine in 1847. The Choctaw were one of the nations forced to march during the Trail of Tears. #StPatricksDay

This is South Dakota at the state capitol. And, in South Dakota, it’s not uncommon to hear white people call Natives “Prairie n———,” and shout “injuns,” “savages,” “redskins,” and “go back to the reservation!” This is the America we Natives experience. Enjoy your Chiefs game.

Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay, folks. Today, take a moment to learn a bit about who we are, who we are not, and how you too can help fight racism and discrimination aimed at us. Read my piece via @VICE to help you get started: vice.com/en_us/article/…

Redface is racism. The headdress is to be honored, not belittled. We, Native Americans, are humans. Not commodities. We are not mascots.

Indian reservations were first established as prison camps. The U.S. gave each prison camp a number. The Pine Ridge prison camp, for example, is prison camp 334. Then, the U.S. documented each Native by assigning them a number, too. That's why, today, we have enrollment numbers.
