BREAKING: The ACLU’s request for an injunction on SB 1 has been GRANTED, meaning the law is temporarily no longer in effect while the full lawsuit plays out. That means ABORTION IS STILL LEGAL in our state for now. I will keep Hoosiers apprised of any new updates as they develop.

Montana. Kentucky. Michigan. Vermont. California. FIVE states had abortion referendums on their ballot. In ALL FIVE states, autonomy and the freedom to choose won. IN doesn’t have these kinds of referendums because the supermajority is afraid to ask Hoosiers their opinion.

Thanks to IN Republicans, Hoosier women are now lesser human beings than we were yesterday. We have lost the right to self-determination, to autonomy, to the futures we want to build for ourselves. It’s an outrage and an imposition on freedom, equality & the values of democracy.

Yesterday, I filed bills that restore abortion access up to 20 weeks, eliminate the tax on personal hygiene products, increase access to affordable mental health care, protect utility customers & more. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work for Hoosiers.

UPDATE: The Indiana Supreme Court has agreed to take immediate jurisdiction over the lawsuit against SB 1, originally slated to go through the normal appeals process. The oral argument is set for January 12, 2023. At least until then, abortion remains legal in Indiana.

🎉🎉 So proud that SB 252, my bill expanding Hoosiers’ access to IUDs and other long-acting contraceptives, passed Health Committee UNANIMOUSLY today. Hoosiers deserve to plan their families on their own time, and they deserve access to healthcare. This is a win for Indiana!

SB 480 passed out of committee today, despite opposition from parents, practitioners, and trans youth. I’m extraordinarily disappointed by this outcome. Gender-affirming care is safe, backed by research, and necessary for many. I will fight this legislation tooth and nail.

Today, women across Indiana woke up with less freedom and fewer rights than they had yesterday. We are living through a dark moment in history, but it is NOT permanent. We vote. We volunteer. We work. We win. Doubtless, it will be a long road back, but we will triumph.

So happy to report that HB 1134 - which would have contributed to our teacher shortage, stifled classroom conversations and limited access to counseling services for students - has died today. Thank you to the hundreds who came out and thousands who spoke against this bill.

This year, IU’s student government will cover the cost of emergency contraceptives for as long as funds last. This is especially necessary in light of SB 1, which undercuts reproductive freedom. I’m proud of this effort and will keep pushing for expanded contraceptive access. 🧵
