    A red tide offshore San Diego is bringing a spectacular display of #bioluminescence to beaches at night, as captured in this photo by John H. Moore. Scripps scientist Michael Latz said the red tide is due to massive numbers of dinoflagellates including Lingulodinium polyedra. 🌊

    Dinoflagellates use #bioluminescence as a predator avoidance behavior. When the phytoplankton are agitated by waves or other movement in the water, they emit a dazzling neon blue glow at night. This video by Scripps' Michael Latz shows bioluminescent waves near Scripps Pier! 🌊🏄

    Today Kim Prather (@kprather88) gifted a #CorsiRosenthalBox to the @WhiteHouse, as part of her outreach on the importance of cleaning the air to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV2. Nicknamed “Air Force One,” it was presented to @WHOSTP by Prather and @MarinaC_Dyb of @UConn.

    There have been some fishy finds on #SanDiego beaches lately, and these are deep-sea dwellers that rarely see the light of day! Recently, a deceased Pacific footballfish, one of the largest #anglerfish species, washed ashore at Black’s Beach. 📷Shane Drosi 10news.com/news/local-new…

    We have #AtmosphericRivers to thank for all this recent rain! 🌧️ The team from @CW3E_Scripps says we are at 31 atmospheric river events so far this water year (11 weak, 13 moderate, 6 strong, 1 extreme). Here is the map of where and when they all hit. ⬇️

    Rare find‼️ A Pacific #footballfish, one of the largest species of #anglerfish, washed ashore near Encinitas last Friday. Lifeguards notified scientists about the unique #deepsea creature, and Scripps scientist Ben @Frable was able to collect it for research and preservation.

    Scientists with @NOAAFisheries and Scripps Oceanography got their first live look at what might be a new species of #killerwhale. Called Type D, the whales were previously known only from strandings, fishermen’s stories, and tourist photographs. scripps.ucsd.edu/news/scientist…

    🌊 Last weekend, some lucky kayakers and snorkelers came across a rare deep-sea dwelling fish in La Jolla Cove. The seagoers spotted a 12-foot #oarfish and to give you an idea of how rare this encounter is, only 20 oarfish have washed up in California since 1901!
