The #STLCards play the Cubs today in STL.
They’re 4.5 games behind the NY Mets, who occupy the 3rd WC spot, and are currently on a cooler.
Oh and the Mets are in Milwaukee for 2 more…
Oh and the Cards host the Rockies next week.
I’ll say it: these are meaningful games.
The #STLCards are likely to finish in the bottom 10 for attendance this year. I’d never have believed that 5 years ago.
Ownership won’t invest after losing.
Fans won’t show up if they’re losing.
There’s a cycle. Ownership needs to break it. Fans aren’t budging
The trade Donovan at peak value crowd makes no sense to me. Do we want the #STLCards to be the Yankees or Dodgers AAAA team? Why are we afraid to pay a homegrown talent? Especially one who does so many things right.
I really hope the #STLCards don’t trade Brendan Donovan. There are a number of reasons, more than I can fit here. Enough that he should be a career Cardinal.
But I’ll just stick with this. Donnie’s the best guy they’ve developed in 5 years. Trading him is moving backwards.
Not pictured: Masyn Winn.
The #STLCards SS ranks 6th in fWAR and leads all of baseball in OAA with 22.
But Betts and his .684 OPS check in here at #4.
Cool
Quick check in #STLCards
Since being moved
Helsley: 5 IP, 3 ER
Maton: 6.1 IP, 5 ER
Matz: 4.2 IP, 0 ER
Fedde: 15 IP, 11 ER
Yeah I’ll take that for 6 players, 4-5 of whom slot into the orgs top 30
Say what you will, but Mo has had two nice deadlines as a seller (23, 25)
If you want the #STLCards to lose, why? They already sold at the deadline. They can’t draft in the top 10 this year.
If you’re telling me you’d rather them draft 4-5 picks higher than make the playoffs? You’re crazy. And wrong!
Most obnoxious things about #STLCards Twitter
1) Calling Donovan a “utility player”
2) Calling Noot a “fourth outfielder”
3) Assuming prospects can fix all problems
4) Putting unreasonable expectations on young players
5) Blind criticism of Mo/Oli (informed criticism is ok)
What an awesome win for the #STLCards
They’re flawed
They’re probably not going to make a deep run
They’re probably not even going to make October
But they’re playing some fun baseball and they’re in the hunt!
Go Birds!!
JJ Wetherholt has yet another 3 hit night. It’s the top of the 5th inning, and he’s likely to get another 2 AB. He’s now hitting .341 with a 1.067 OPS at AAA
