💧Join us at SWBNO's Water Talks to learn about our water system, our Water Quality Master Plan and introduce our Executive Director, Randy Hayman.
📍We hope to see you there!
Although we have lost all Entergy power, our teams are working quickly and decisively to make up for this with our self-generated power sources, including Turbines 4, 5, and 6 and EMD, as well as backup generators located at our drainage pumping stations.
We want to correct a number of reports we are seeing. New Orleans is NOT currently under a boil water advisory. Our water pressure remains stable and our water remains safe to drink.
This power loss also impacts our sewer pumping stations. Currently there is no backup power to operate any of those that were impacted. We are assessing how many of the 84 stations are impacted but the number may be very significant.
We have suspended water service shut-offs & will adhere to this policy change for the duration of the Mayor’s Declared Emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. SWBNO will also proactively work to restore water service to those customers who have been disconnected.
A number of our Sewage Pump Stations on both the East and West Bank of New Orleans are experiencing power outages. This increases the potential for sewer backups in homes. We urge those residents who still have power to minimize wastewater leaving their homes by not running…
We have worked to obtain backup power for some of these stations & we will mobilize those units when it is safe to traverse the city. In order to prevent sewage backups, we have asked residents to limit water usage at home, thus decreasing the amount of wastewater we must remove.
The Entergy loss of power is a significant loss of power for our 60 hz pumps and the 25 hz pumps we power through the frequency changers, but we are using our self-generated sources of power to drain stormwater and pump drinking water into the city.
We are proud to announce that we currently have 100% of our drainage pumps - 99 of 99 - available for service! This is a major milestone for our utility, the first time all drainage pumps have been available in recent history.
Update: All 99 drainage pumps available for service; SWBNO offices closed tomorrow. We are continuing to make preparations ahead of #Marco & #TSLaura. Our Emergency Operations Center is activated, allowing us to quickly receive updates and make swift decisions.
This morning’s rain came down at an extraordinary rate. As an example on Mother’s Day, we received 4.5 inches in 3 hours, today was nearly double. Our stations are fully manned & were fully manned throughout the storm. We are all hands on deck & are continuing to work this event.
Our sewage system is not yet at full operating capacity, this is why we are urging the public to be extremely mindful when using water. Please limit using large appliances such as dishwashers that are not water efficient, and washing machines. Focus on general water conservation.
