A yearly tradition at the South Pole is the winter-over crew watching "The Thing" right after the last flight for the summer leaves. Here is a picture of the yearly showing in the gym #southpole #winter #Xenophobia #science

It's only been about a week and a half since #sunrise and its already much brighter outside! Telescope is looking good, but the buildings have their usual post-winter frosting / icing on the outside. Picture by winterover Josh! #southpole #Antarctica

The station penguin getting one last look at the South Pole out the galley window! Yesterday, the windows on station were covered to avoid any light pollution during winter, so no more looking out windows for another 6 months! #southpole #Antarctica #Penguins @shedd_aquarium

An annual tradition, the Race Around the World takes place the day after Christmas, and involves a roughly 3-km race around the geographic #southpole (hence the name of the race). Really more of a fun run, this year also had the usual mix of costumes! #Antarctica

Double sundog around SPT, captured by Amy Bender. Sundogs are the South Pole equivalent of rainbows, except they are caused by ice-crystals in the atmosphere refracting the sun and creating a circular ring the sun (which is shadowed by SPT here). #sundog #Antarctica #southpole

Southern lights are lighting up at the #southpole! With it getting darker and us getting closer to the solar maximum, it should be a really good year for #aurora! Here are some pics from over the weekend by winter over Zeke! #Antarctica

Panorama long-exposure pic of the #southpole station from winter-over Danny Hampton! The sun is about 5-weeks away from rising over the horizon, but you can still see its glow from the long exposure. With the #MILKYWAY prominent over the station! #Antarctica #astronomy

Scenes from McMurdo #Antarctica, after the station went into "green" status, having no new people arrive on station for the past week meant #covid social distancing rules relaxed!

Another stunning picture from winter-over Geoff Chen of the Dark Sector Laboratory (DSL) last week! DSL is the furthest away from station with regular occupancy (~1-km), hosting both the SPT and BICEP3 experiments. #southpole #Antarctica #astronomy
