- Being embarrassed in practice so you can be comfortable in the game > Being comfortable in practice and embarrassed in the game.
- If we could only get this point across to more.. “To get to easy, you have to go through hard”
- “The gardener cannot actually “grow” tomatoes, squash, or beans. She can only foster an environment in which the plants do so.” Sounds like player development. We don’t “make” players better. We CREATE environments that allow them to flourish. #TeamOfTeams
- Winning isn’t everything until: You get benched Get cut Lose your job Get released Get beat -Win each rep -Win each moment Because at some point, WINNING MATTERS. Make it important, before it’s important.
- Hear it all the time: “One more” “End on a good one” BUT- There may be more benefit from having to work through the “failure” between rounds than “feeling good” after each. After all, isn’t that how the game works at times? We have to live with our last one. Practice it.
- In our profession we miss a lot of moments... But today.... I saw the FIRST goal! #Values
- Key distinctions: Working Hard vs Being a Hard Worker Playing Pro Ball vs Being a Pro Player Winning vs Being a Winner Getting grades vs Being a true student Getting hits vs Being a Hitter One = situational (outcome based) One = way of life (process based) #Values
- Instead of SAYING: “This player (team) isn’t buying in.” Try ASKING: “How can I adjust the environment to make it more engaging?” - Placing blame will sink you. - Ownership will catapult you.
- If they don’t learn the way you coach, coach the way they learn. EVERY player is “coachable.”
- 4:00 am: Twin baby 1 wakes up hungry 5:30 am: Twin baby 2 wakes up hungry 6:00 am: 4yr old wakes up and says, “Hey dad.. let’s count to INFINITY” We’re at 147... this may be a longer morning than expected
