People should stop calling SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines a ‘miracle’. These vaccine are not miracles—they did not drop out of the sky. These vaccine are the result of decades of basic research.
Everyone who likes the idea of vaccine miracles should support funding for basic research.

- We developed a new multivalent mRNA vaccine against all known influenza virus subtypes. Our study describing the vaccine was just published in @ScienceMagazine. 1/n
- Everyone needs to understand that the decline of SARS-CoV-2 Abs after the peak of infection is normal. This is basic immunology. If our immune system did not contract after viral infections, we would all be walking around with gigantic lymph nodes. SARS-CoV-2 Abs look good!A new @NEJM report on rapid decay of #SARCoV2 antibodies in people with mild infections nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… For context of this finding, @DKThomp took it on yesterday nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… @TheAtlantic and x.com/EricTopol/stat…
- Wow. 7% is a big number. There are 100,000 dairy workers in the United States. 7% of 100,000 is 7,000 cases....a tad higher than the 46 H5 human cases reported in the United States. This is too many shots on goal, and I worry about a random mutation that increases human spread..@CDCMMWR : Serologic Evidence of Recent Infection with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5) Virus Among Dairy Workers - MI and CO Among 115 persons, eight (7%; 95% CI = 3.6%–13.1%) had serologic evidence of recent infection with A(H5) virus cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7… #h5n1
- A predatory journal has been aggressively emailing me over the past week, so I just set up a new Bed Bath and Beyond web account with their email address and signed up for every alert possible. #NotAllSuperherosWearCapes
- One of the real heroes over that past 3 months is Trevor Bedford @trvrb at @fredhutch. I think Bedford and Fauci get top prizes for transparency and impact so far during this pandemic. Trevor's insights have immediately shaped policy, and it is remarkable to see it happen.
- I'm so proud of my lab members right now. They are working 7 days a week, generating massive amounts of SARS-CoV-2 serological data. It is an honor to work with them. I'm so lucky to have such a great group and I am just so proud of them.
- The preliminary sequence from the H5N1 human case in British Columbia has been posted and it is not good news. I just posted a thread of my thoughts on this on the blue sky site.
- I’ll always look back fondly on the 36 hours our maternal antibody paper was under review at Nature
- Unfortunately, there will likely be an H3N2 antigenic mismatch with the 2021-2022 Northern Hemisphere influenza vaccine. Our manuscript describing this has been posted on @medrxivpreprint. 1/10
- mRNA vaccines elicit ‘super awesome’ levels of antibodies and their reactivity drops from ‘super awesome’ to just ‘awesome’—and that is good enough for neutralizing variants.
00:00 - Check out our new preprint: SARS-CoV-2 infections elicit higher levels of original antigenic sin antibodies compared to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccinations 1/
- Our new paper showing that some humans possessed non-neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic is now up at @medrxivpreprint. Importantly, we find that these antibodies are not associated with SARS-CoV-2 protection. 1/7
- I’m a scientist and I have 2 kids that are between 5 and 11 years old. I respect that some parents have concerns about COVID-19 mRNA vaccines for their young children. Here is a short thread why my wife and I decided to vaccinate both of our kids last week. (1/8)
