Imposter syndrome is hitting hard this morning. I recently found out that graduate students have been told by more established PIs that I am a โred flagโ because I have not yet secured external funding and because I havenโt recruited other graduate students. 1/

- Something that always lifts my spirits? The axolotls! In the midst of everything thatโs going on, I am happy caring for our animals. Meet โChonkโ our largest younginโ. Weโre pretty sure he ate a sibling once.
- I was thinking about some of the comments I received on my F32 NIH postdoctoral fellowship application from 6-7 years ago. Itโs surprising how frustrated I still get when I think about it. A thread... 1/
- Replying to @RogersLabUCDTo increase inclusivity in academia, we will need to re-define our metrics of excellence, which may be consciously or subconsciously biased and based on a less than perfect system. We are not a monolith and there are many successful paths to academia. 7/
- Replying to @RogersLabUCDFor those of you reviewing grants and grad school applications, please try to think about people who come from different circumstances. Not everyone has parents who understand the system and help them navigate or enough cash to flow through the system without interruptions. 6/
- Replying to @RogersLabUCDOverall- if you are trying to retain committed, talented, passionate junior faculty- some of whom have added service tax as URM or women- maybe think- would you have phrased your comments that way if you were talking about a white male junior faculty member? Not OK. 5/
- Replying to @RogersLabUCDHappy Thanksgiving. I will be working all week and weekend to ensure that my papers and grants are written, animals are cared for, figures are made, and my traineesโ are ok. 6/
- Replying to @RogersLabUCDThird- instead of suggesting that the research in a Junior PIโs lab may not be โimpactfulโ enough to get a grant, please offer to read their grants and coach them on grantsmanship. Maybe we had different resources than you and only learned to write grants as a faculty member. 4/
- I am ECSTATIC to announce that I have been awarded an @NSF CAREER award to study the role of transcription factors and cell adhesion in #NeuralCrest cell development and differentiation in avians (๐, quail, and ๐ฆ)! 1/
GIF - Replying to @RogersLabUCDFirst- I arrived to Davis one year ago and 6 months of this time was pandemic. I wasnโt recruiting students last year because we didnโt even have a lab yet, and I donโt believe itโs the job of a grad student to set up a lab. Also, someone has to be โthe firstโ. 2/
- Replying to @jreneebadIโm so sorry for your loss. ๐I can empathize with your story, and having a โtouchstoneโ is sometimes just what we need to keep from repeating the cycle.
- Replying to @RogersLabUCDSecond- I arrived at UC Davis after having a thriving lab at CSUN for 3.5 years. I am not new to mentoring although I have not yet had a PhD student. Also- I am a champion for my students. It is my goal to ensure success and opportunity in a supportive environment. 3/
- In Aug. of 2003, I moved across the country to attend grad school @GUBiology. I was 24, had no idea what to expect, and had little confidence in my own ability. This week, I received news that I will be promoted to an Associate Professor with tenure @ucdavis in July 2023! 1/5
GIF - I received notice that I would be promoted with tenure months ago, but itโs technically not official until 7-1-23. However, Iโm not waiting until tomorrow for this. On July 1, 2023, my tenure and promotion @ucdavis @ucdavisvetmed are official! #tenure #promotion #DevBio ๐๐ช๐ฝโค๏ธ
